April 14, 2016, Camping des Sedia Hotels, Maun, Botswana
“There’s a 4×4 Sprinter driving under the big tree next to us” – We peer curiously behind the curtains at the dark green four-wheel-drive Sprinter. “It could be a Swiss vehicle”.
Soon afterwards, Iris and Walter approach us, Iris on foot – Walter in a wheelchair. We greet each other and take a seat at our camping table and we are already in the middle of a conversation. Walter and Iris come from Lucerne, from the neighboring village of a relative. They have converted their all-wheel-drive Sprinter so that there is still room for the wheelchair. As they are both still working, they regularly go on vacation to southern Africa. This time it is 7 weeks. They hired their 4×4 Sprinter in Namibia. They already know southern Africa like the back of their hand. We are delighted that the two of them have the courage to travel to remote regions in wheelchairs – such as the Central Kalahari.
We also spend a nice evening together and hope to see them again in southern Africa or Switzerland.
